Do Binaural Beats Work?
The most accurate short answer is: the auditory phenomenon is real, but research on consistent brainwave entrainment and broader outcomes is mixed.
What systematic research found
A 2023 systematic review examining whether binaural beats entrain brain activity reported inconsistent results across 14 studies: some supported entrainment, more contradicted it, and one produced mixed findings. Methodological differences limited firm conclusions.
Why studies can disagree
Experiments vary in carrier tones, beat frequencies, listening duration, EEG methods, participant populations and outcome measures. Those differences make it difficult to turn a general research finding into a promise about a particular track.
What this means for listeners
It is reasonable to treat binaural audio as a listening tool you may or may not enjoy. It is not reasonable to assume that a frequency label guarantees a particular mental state or major cognitive result.
