Brainwave Frequencies Explained
EEG activity is commonly discussed in broad frequency bands such as delta, theta, alpha, beta and gamma. These labels describe observed oscillatory activity; they are not magic settings that guarantee a mental outcome.
Commonly discussed bands
Delta
Slow-frequency activity often discussed in relation to deep sleep.
Theta
Often discussed in relation to drowsiness, memory processes and some meditative states.
Alpha
Commonly associated with relaxed wakefulness in simplified explanations.
Beta
Often discussed in relation to active waking cognition.
Gamma
Higher-frequency activity studied across multiple cognitive processes.
Avoid the “frequency = guaranteed state” shortcut
Real brain activity is dynamic and context-dependent. Hearing an audio track labeled “theta” does not automatically establish that your brain has entered a specific state or that a promised outcome will follow.
