Brainwave Entrainment: Meaning, Methods & Evidence

Brainwave entrainment describes the idea that rhythmic sensory stimulation can influence neural oscillatory activity. Auditory approaches include binaural beats and other rhythmic sound methods.

The hypothesis

The basic proposal is that periodic stimulation may encourage neural activity to synchronize or show frequency-following responses. But “entrainment” can be defined and measured differently across studies.

Evidence is not one simple yes/no

Research differs by stimulus, recording method and outcome. A systematic review of binaural-beat entrainment studies found conflicting findings and substantial heterogeneity.

Marketing versus evidence

A product can accurately say it contains binaural-beat audio without that fact proving every promised outcome. Claims about intelligence, disease, income or guaranteed mental performance need their own evidence.
